Of course that you can call AimAirDuctCleaning and have a professional and thorough cleaning, to insure your HVAC system from future damages and repairs. But you can also do some work by yourself. This is a simple explanation for DIY and you will only need home tools and some patience.
What you need?
You will need some common tools that you will be able to find in your home or simply borrow from someone. After that you are all set to begin the cleaning process.
- Screwdriver
- Cleaning Towels
- Vacuum Cleaner
- Brush
1. Screwdriver
You will need a screwdriver to unfasten screws that usually keep the HVAC covers tight and secure

2. Cleaning Towels
Take some cleaning towels because you will need them to remove the dust between tight spaces and to not leave anything behind and as a result you will have squeaky clean air ducts.

3. Vacuum Cleaner
Here the vacuum cleaner is going to do most of the job. Firstly it will collect almost all of the dust and dirt and also reach spaces that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to reach. A strong vacuum cleaner with a bigger dust bag would be recommended, so you don’t need to clean it frequently and let it rest.

4. Brush
The brush will be used to scratch all the dirt that has been stuck in the HVAC system and also likewise the vacuum cleaner, you can reach spaces that are further from you.
The 5 Steps To Start Cleaning Your Air Ducts
Now that you have all the equipment ready, you can start and clean your HVAC air ducts.
1. Cover your AC vents
Because the vent will collect a lot of dust, during the removal process you may scatter all that dust inside your house, so firstly cover your vents with the towels.
2. Turn off the power
Because of electrical risk, we need to be sure that we aren’t connected to any power supply. So make sure to turn off the electricity for your HVAC system and after that we can proceed with the cleaning.
3. Unscrew the vents
After you have covered them now you can unscrew the vents, and remove them aside, so you can clean them thoroughly.
4. Clean your AC vents
If you have plastic or metal air vents without any electrical connection to them then you can also use water to clean them. Than using the extra towels that we mentioned before, you can dry them and now you are left with shiny air vents. Time to clean the inside of the air ducts.
5. Vacuum the insides
Now comes the dirtiest part, but also the most important one. Turn on your vacuum and start sucking all the dirt and dust in your air vents. Hopefully you have a vacuum with a long hose so you can reach deep places. The more power the vacuum has the better for you.
6. Brush and wipe
After you are done with the vacuum, use your brush to remove the dirt and mold that the vacuum wasn’t able to. The longer the brush the better and in addition use some towels to wipe where you can reach with your hands
7. Change the filters (Optional)
So if you have some extra filters then you may remove the old ones and replace them with new ones. This change will help for a higher air quality level because it will be able to keep more dust away from your place.
8. Put everything back
Now you are left with a clean air duct, and a lot of dust and dirt in your trash. Put the air vents into their places and screw them back. After this turn the power on for your HVAC system.
To sum up
This process may look easy but it involves a lot of work and dust, so it may not be very convenient for you to do this every time by yourself.
